Several explosions were reported in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, late on Thursday night, according to local media sources. The blasts reportedly occurred near the Kabul airport, causing brief panic among residents.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that the city had heard an explosion and that authorities were investigating the incident.
He assured citizens there was no cause for concern and that initial reports indicated no casualties or damage.
In a post on X, Mujahid stated, “The sound of an explosion was heard in the city of Kabul. However, no one should worry, it is all well and good, the investigation of the incident is underway, no report of any damage has been given so far.”
While the Taliban maintained that only one explosion occurred, some residents told the Kabul Tribune that they heard multiple blasts near the airport area. Another outlet, Amu, reported that witnesses heard at least two explosions followed by the sound of an aircraft.
As of now, authorities have not provided further details on the cause of the blasts or any potential link to ongoing security operations in the area.
The explosion comes as Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, arrived in India on Thursday for a week-long official visit.
This marks the first ministerial-level engagement between India and the Taliban-led government. The group seized control of Kabul in August 2021.
Welcoming Muttaqi’s visit, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X, “We look forward to engaging discussions with him on bilateral relations and regional issues.”
Muttaqi will remain in India until October 16. Officials will likely focus discussions on trade, humanitarian cooperation, and regional security.
As investigations continue, the Taliban government has urged residents to remain calm, asserting that there is no immediate threat. Officials have yet to release any official findings regarding the cause or motive behind the explosion. Authorities are awaiting more details.
