Elon Musk has vehemently criticized Brazil’s Supreme Court decision to block his social media platform, X, nationwide, accusing the ruling of a severe assault on freedom of speech.
The decision, issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, came after X’s refusal to appoint a legal representative in Brazil.
In a scathing response, Musk described the move as an attempt to silence what he called the top source of truth in Brazil.
“The oppressive regime in Brazil is so afraid of the people learning the truth that they will bankrupt anyone who tries,” Musk declared.
He urged his followers to continue accessing X via its website, X.com, and suggested downloading a VPN to circumvent the ban.
The conflict between X and the Brazilian judiciary has been ongoing for months, with the platform facing criticism for not adhering to court orders to remove accounts promoting anti-democratic content and coup-related material.
The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court has also imposed fines totaling 18 million reais (approximately $3.2 million) on X for failing to comply with these orders.
Justice de Moraes justified the block by alleging that X had become a platform for extremist groups and digital militias, enabling the spread of harmful ideologies, including Nazi, racist, and fascist rhetoric.
He further instructed Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to enforce the block within 24 hours and gave Apple and Google five days to remove the X app from their stores.
Musk condemned the decision, stating, “Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes.”
