EAM S. Jaishankar Engages With Political Leaders On Final Day Of Mauritius Visit

On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar concluded his two-day visit to Mauritius, engaging with several political leaders, including former Prime Ministers Paul Berenger and Navin Ramgoolam.

Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for Ramgoolam’s support for India-Mauritius ties, noting, “It was a pleasure to meet with former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. We discussed our longstanding bilateral partnership and the desire for its growth.”

Following this, he had a lively conversation with Berenger about contemporary global issues.

In a meeting with Leader of Opposition Arvin Boollel, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the India-Mauritius relationship for the prosperity of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), welcoming Boollel’s support for strengthening these ties.

Jaishankar also met with Xavier Luc Duval, Leader of the Parti Mauricien Social Democrat, to discuss deepening cooperation between the two nations.

Later in the day, Jaishankar and the Prime Minister of Mauritius are likely to inaugurate a Mediclinic in Grand Bois, funded by Indian grant assistance, as part of ongoing collaborative projects.

He will also visit the India-assisted Civil Service College in Moka, nearing its inauguration.

On Tuesday, Jaishankar held extensive talks with Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, covering various aspects of bilateral relations, including development partnership, defense cooperation, economic ties, and cultural connections.

Together, they inaugurated several High Impact Community Development Projects and exchanged MoUs, including handing the first Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to two seventh-generation Indian-origin Mauritians.

Jaishankar praised the commitment of those involved in the Civil Service College project, stating, “Happy to interact with those making this a reality. They keep the Indian flag flying high abroad.”

In total, 12 community development projects spanning infrastructure, education, healthcare, public amenities, and sports were virtually inaugurated on Tuesday.
