Today, the local governor stated a drone struck a residential building in Russia’s southern city of Voronezh, injuring two people.
Drone attacks have been common in Russian cities, including Moscow, in recent months as Kyiv prepares a major counter-offensive.
It is the first such incident in Voronezh, a city of around one million people located in the region deeper into Russia than Belgorod — which has been heavily attacked by Ukraine.
In a Telegram post, the governor of the region, Alexander Gusev said, “A drone fell on Belinsky Street in Voronezh”.
He claimed that at least two individuals were hurt in the attack, which occurred about 200 kilometres (124 miles) from the Ukraine border.
Belinsky Street is located in the city core, near Voronezh State University.
Russian state media displayed photographs of a building with shattered windows and a burnt section of its exterior, where the drone had allegedly struck.
Gusev stated that Russia’s FSB security and emergency services were working near the building and pledged assistance to the inhabitants.
Drone strikes on Russian cities have occurred throughout Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine but have increased in recent months.
This month, the Belgorod region, which borders the Voronezh region, has been heavily shelled, prompting thousands of people to flee border towns.
Late in May, Moscow was targeted by an unprecedented drone attack.
