President Donald Trump has asserted that the United States will acquire Greenland, highlighting the territory’s strategic importance in the Arctic.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump warned that failure to secure Greenland could allow Russia or China to take control.
Trump stressed the necessity of US ownership, saying, “If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will. And I’m not letting that happen.”
He indicated a preference for a negotiated agreement but insisted the result was inevitable.
“I’d rather — I’d love to make a deal with ’em. It’s easier. But one way or the other, we’re gonna have Greenland,” he stated.
When asked whether military action might be considered, Trump clarified that the focus was on acquiring the territory outright.
“We’re talking about acquiring, not leasing, not having it short-term. We’re talking about acquiring,” he said.
Trump dismissed concerns over Greenland’s current defences, joking that ‘basically their defence is two dog sledges’, while contrasting it with Russian and Chinese naval activity in the Arctic.
He argued that a US military presence alone was insufficient, adding, “You need ownership. You really need a title, as they say in the real estate business.”
Addressing potential diplomatic concerns, Trump downplayed any negative impact on NATO.
“I’m the one who saved NATO,” he claimed, noting that alliance members are now contributing 5 per cent of GDP.
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, holds strategic significance due to its location in the Arctic, its proximity to emerging shipping routes, and key military corridors.
The United States already maintains a military presence on the island, which has grown increasingly relevant amid heightened Russian and Chinese activity in the region.
When asked whether Denmark had received a formal offer, Trump said no, adding that Greenland should initiate the deal.
Analysts note that the Arctic’s geopolitical and economic importance has intensified in recent years, making Greenland a focal point for global powers.
The President’s remarks underline the US administration’s prioritisation of Arctic strategy, raising questions about the future of US-Denmark relations and regional security dynamics.
