Downing Street announced that former UK PM David Cameron has been selected as the new foreign secretary, marking an extraordinary return to high office for an ex-leader. The surprise selection of the former prime minister follows Suella Braverman’s dismissal as home secretary and James Cleverly’s appointment to take her place, creating an opening for the top position at the foreign office.
From 2010 to 2016, David Cameron led Britain until he resigned in the wake of the Brexit referendum’s defeat. In an unexpected move, he takes James Cleverly’s post as interior minister.
“It is clear to me that Rishi Sunak is a strong and capable prime minister, though I may have disagreed with some individual decisions,” David Cameron remarked upon Sunak’s appointment.
The UK is “facing a daunting set of international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East,” the former prime minister said, adding that he has “gladly accepted” the position. It has never been more crucial for this nation to support our allies, fortify our alliances, and ensure that our voice is heard than it is during this period of tremendous global change.”

“I hope that my experience – as Conservative Leader for eleven years and prime minister for six – will assist me in helping the prime minister to meet these vital challenges,” he said.
According to Rishi Sunak’s office, King Charles has given David Cameron permission to rejoin the government as a minister by granting him a seat in the House of Lords, the UK’s upper house. In the UK parliament, David Cameron is not a duly elected member.
