COP28 Summit Making Headway, President Says Progress is Insufficient

The president of COP28 asked all nations to put aside narrow self-interest while stating that although the climate meeting was making progress, it was “not fast enough.” “Closing the window will help to seal the gaps. The Emirati oil magnate Sultan Al Jaber, who is spearheading the meeting in Dubai, told a late-night session, “We are making progress, but not fast enough and not satisfying enough.”

Jaber has maintained that negotiators have till Tuesday, the official end of COP28, to reach a resolution.

However, requests by environmentally conscious nations to gradually phase out fossil fuels have put a strain on negotiations; the main opposition comes from Saudi Arabia and the OPEC oil cartel.

Although he has not advocated for a quick transition, Jaber has stated that moving away from coal, gas, and oil is “inevitable” despite his experience in the oil industry.

“Now is the time to put aside self-interest for the common interest,” Jaber stated.

“Now is the time to be as accommodating as possible in order to reach a consensus. It’s time to change course and reach a consensus,” he declared.

“I am convinced that there is a balanced and ambitious package out there that all parties can and should align around.”
