China is strengthening its domestic intellectual property rights framework while facing criticism over alleged violations involving Chinese companies in overseas markets, according to a report published by Uganda’s Nile Post.
Beijing increasingly views intellectual property as a strategic national resource, the report said.
Critics argue that this approach can place domestic priorities ahead of international frameworks, including the World Trade Organization’s TRIPS agreement and conventions administered by the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
The report cited the 2026 Frankfurt Auto Parts Show, where German customs reportedly seized 1,274 suspected infringing items, largely from Chinese exhibitors. Authorities reportedly sealed booths and imposed fines.
Chinese companies continue to face allegations of counterfeiting and patent violations in foreign markets despite efforts to strengthen overseas intellectual property protection.
The approach has raised concerns about the emergence of a parallel IP ecosystem that could complicate competition and affect confidence among international buyers.
European and US markets are introducing stricter requirements covering intellectual property, carbon emissions, labour rights and environmental standards.
The report cited allegations involving Chinese EV maker BYD, including claims from purported employees that some stainless-steel components were replaced with carbon steel and quality checks were reduced.
Recent reporting has not independently verified these claims.
Another case involved automotive lighting company Shing Yu, which allegedly offered reduced salaries to newly recruited graduates.
Unresolved disputes could affect China’s position in global supply chains, with some buyers reportedly shifting orders towards Southeast Asia, neighbouring countries and Taiwan.
The report argued that closer alignment between China’s domestic IP system and international norms would be important for maintaining confidence among global businesses and buyers.
