Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plans to resign as leader of the Liberal Party, according to a report by The Globe and Mail. Three anonymous sources revealed that Trudeau may announce his decision before a crucial caucus meeting on Wednesday. Liberal lawmakers are pushing for his resignation.
It remains unclear whether Trudeau will also step down as Prime Minister or stay until the party chooses a new leader. His resignation would lead to a leadership contest, with the winner likely taking over as Prime Minister.
Trudeau has faced growing criticism. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s sudden resignation on December 16 worsened the pressure. In her resignation letter, she openly criticized Trudeau’s leadership.
In September 2024, Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party (NDP) withdrew its support for Trudeau’s minority government. Singh accused the Liberals of failing Canadians and declared them unfit to lead. This move weakened Trudeau’s administration and hurt its chances in this year’s elections.
Economic struggles and declining public support have created further challenges for the Liberal Party. Recent polls show the Conservatives are likely to win decisively in the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Trudeau has considered naming Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc as interim leader. However, this plan may face complications if LeBlanc decides to run for party leadership.
Trudeau became Liberal leader in 2013 and revived the party from its third-place position in the House of Commons. Now, his potential resignation raises concerns about the party’s readiness for elections. This situation could also trigger calls for an expedited vote to address Canada’s pressing issues.
Trudeau’s office has not commented on the resignation rumours.
