Brazil And China Call For Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks

On Thursday, Brazil and China signed a joint declaration asking for peace talks in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with both nations’ participation.

The declaration, signed by Celso Amorim, special advisor to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, stated that the countries think diplomacy is the only possible solution to the Ukraine crisis.

“The two countries support an international peace conference held at a proper time that is recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation of all parties as well as fair discussion of all peace plans”, the declaration reads.

Dozens of additional nations have signed up for a summit in June, which Switzerland hopes would pave the path for a peace process in Ukraine. Russia has not been invited.

Brazil and China also urged all relevant parties to follow three rules for de-escalating the situation: no battlefield expansion, no escalation of fighting, and no provocation from any party.

Brazil and China stated that the use of weapons of mass destruction, particularly nuclear weapons, chemical, and biological weapons, must be rejected and that every possible effort must be made to prevent nuclear proliferation and avoid a nuclear crisis.
