Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth Begins Three-Day Russia Visit To Strengthen Defence Cooperation

Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth began a three-day official visit to Russia on Wednesday to strengthen India-Russia defence ties and military-to-military cooperation.

The visit, from September 16 to 18, includes high-level meetings with senior Russian military and defence officials.

During the visit, General Seth will hold discussions with Colonel General Andrei Nikolayevich Mordvichev, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Land Forces, on matters of mutual interest, including professional military cooperation and training.

In Moscow, the Army Chief will receive a ceremonial Guard of Honour and pay tribute to fallen soldiers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He will visit the National Defence Control Centre and interact with senior Russian Ministry of Defence officials, including Deputy Defence Minister Vasily Sergeyevich Osmakov, who handles defence industry and procurement.

The engagements will provide an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on contemporary military developments and explore avenues to further enhance defence cooperation.

The Ministry of Defence said the visit reflects the importance India and Russia attach to sustained military diplomacy and Army-to-Army engagement.

General Seth will travel to Saint Petersburg to visit the Mikhailovskaya Military Artillery Academy and meet its leadership and faculty.

The visit comes amid continued institutional engagement between India and Russia on military and military-technical cooperation.

On August 20-21, a Working Group on Planning of the Russia-India Intergovernmental Commission on Military and Military-Technical Cooperation met in New Delhi.

The two sides reviewed their joint activity plan, outlined measures for 2027 and discussed ways to expand military cooperation.

General Seth took charge as the 31st Army Chief on June 30, 2026, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi. His visit to Russia will further strengthen India-Russia military cooperation and defence ties.
