Authorities stated that severe wind gusts forced a stage in northern Mexico to collapse during a campaign rally on Wednesday, killing at least nine people, including a toddler.
According to Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia, the accident injured at least 50 other people, some critically.
Local media footage of the tragedy showed a chaotic scene as the crowd fled the collapsing stage, while lights and a massive screen plummeted onto the area where longshot presidential contender Jorge Alvarez Maynez and his Citizens’ Movement party supporters were standing.
Governor Samuel Garcia tweeted, “I regret to report that so far the number of people killed in the accident stands at eight adults and one minor”, through his official ‘X’ handle.
Medical crews were spotted loading bodies into trucks while soldiers patrolled a field filled with rubble and campaign posters.
Lorenia Canavati, the Citizens’ Movement candidate for mayor of San Pedro Garza Garcia, held a closing campaign rally.
