3 killed and 77 injured in massive blast caused by explosives in southern Nigerian city

In one of Nigeria’s largest cities, tragedy struck as a massive explosion caused by stored explosives rocked more than 20 buildings, resulting in three fatalities and injuring 77 individuals. The incident occurred in the densely populated Ibadan city, located in the southwestern state of Oyo, on Tuesday night.

Residents were startled by a loud blast at approximately 7:45 pm, prompting widespread panic and the evacuation of homes. By Wednesday morning, security forces had cordoned off the affected area, and medical personnel, along with ambulances, stood by as rescue efforts intensified.

Preliminary investigations, as reported by Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde after visiting the site in the Bodija area of Ibadan, indicated that the explosives responsible for the blast were stored for illegal mining operations. Makinde described the damage as “devastating” and assured the deployment of first responders and relevant agencies in Oyo state for comprehensive search and rescue operations.

The death toll rose to three as rescue workers continued to sift through the rubble, recovering an additional body on Wednesday morning, according to Saheed Akiode, coordinator of Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency in the region.

The identity of those responsible for storing the explosives remained unclear, and no arrests had been announced as of the latest updates. Governor Makinde emphasized ongoing investigations, pledging that those found culpable would be held accountable.

Governor Makinde also addressed the medical needs of the injured, stating that most of the 77 individuals had been discharged. He assured coverage of medical bills for those still receiving treatment and pledged temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected.

Around the blast site, residents gathered as injured individuals were treated in ambulances. The aftermath revealed a scene of destruction, with buildings either partially or entirely destroyed, covered in dust. A massive crater was left as a stark reminder of the impact of the explosion.

The incident sheds light on the prevalent issue of illegal mining in mineral-rich Nigeria, a concern authorities have grappled with. Illegal mining often occurs in remote areas where arrests are challenging, and safety procedures are frequently neglected.

Anthony Adejuwon, leader of the Urban Alert group advocating for mineral resources accountability, highlighted the danger posed by the use of explosives near residential areas. He emphasized the lack of control over these hazardous materials, underscoring the need for stricter regulations to ensure the safety of communities.

As investigations continue, the Nigerian authorities are faced with the task of not only determining accountability but also addressing the broader issue of unsafe mining practices that jeopardize the well-being of both miners and nearby residents.
