The dominance of Brand Yogi in Uttar Pradesh has been further cemented by the BJP’s first victory since Independence in the Rampur Assembly seat on Thursday, making UP the second-largest bastion of the saffron party after Gujarat. Muslims make up more than 50% of the population of Rampur.
This follows the BJP’s prior success in byelections for the Lok Sabha in the Samajwadi Party strongholds of Azamgarh and Rampur. Since independence, the Samajwadi Party has won the Rampur Assembly seat every two decades thanks to Azam Khan and his family. The BJP has never held this seat. Since the country’s independence, the constituency has always had a Muslim MLA. Akash Saxena of the BJP has now won with a staggering 62% of the vote, revealing that several Muslim voters also supported the party in the Rampur Assembly seat.
The outcome was a total reversal from the Rampur Assembly election in March of this year, when Azam Khan defeated Akash Saxena with approximately 60% of the vote. After being found guilty in a case that led to this byelection, Khan was subsequently disqualified. With a stronghold on the Rampur Assembly seat, Azam Khan and his family were able to win 11 of the seat’s 20 elections.
From 1980 to 1995 again from 2002 until 2022, Azam Khan served as the Rampur MLA. This time, a close confidante of Azam Khan was given the ticket.
Elections 2022: The victorious BJP candidate, Akash Saxena, the son of former minister Shiv Bahadur Saxena, claimed that Muslims in Rampur were never treated with respect under the rule of Azam Khan. “Muslims were always downtrodden here and their love was regarded as enslavement. Muslims have liberated themselves from servitude to support me in this election, according to Saxena.
In the 2017 Assembly election, Azam Khan defeated Shiv Bahadur Saxena in Rampur. In March of this year, Akash had also fallen to Azam Khan. The Saxena family has now successfully exacted sweet retaliation against Khan.
The RLD and Dimple Yadav, respectively, won the Khatauli Assembly bypoll and the Manipuri Lok Sabha bypoll, which the BJP lost. Given that the new BJP state president, Bhupendra Choudhary, is from this area in west UP, the Khatauli seat is a loss for the BJP. After Mulayam Singh Yadav’s passing, the Samajwadi Party rode the sympathy wave to romp back home in its stronghold of Manipur.
