Waste On Wheels: How Akshay Deshpande Is Taking Recycling To The Source

Hyderabad entrepreneur Akshay CS Deshpande is taking a mobile approach to waste management through Switcheko’s ‘Sustainability on Wheels’ initiative, which brings waste-processing facilities closer to where waste is generated.

Instead of transporting waste over long distances to centralised facilities, the mobile setup enables processing closer to the source.

The approach aims to reduce transportation requirements while making waste management more accessible and efficient for communities and businesses.

The mobile system supports several waste-processing activities, including shredding, baling, composting, thermocol processing and e-waste handling.

By bringing these capabilities directly to waste-generation sites, the initiative seeks to turn discarded material into usable resources while reducing the need for extensive transportation.

Switcheko says its systems have already processed more than 1 lakh kg of waste, highlighting the potential of mobile solutions in addressing local waste-management challenges.

The initiative follows a decentralised model in which waste can undergo initial processing closer to its source rather than travelling to a distant facility. This can help streamline waste handling and support recycling and resource recovery.

The concept reflects a broader shift towards sustainable waste management, where technology and mobility can help communities deal with waste more efficiently.

Mobile processing units can reach areas that need them, reducing reliance on large, centralised facilities.

By combining mobility with waste-processing technology, Sustainability on Wheels aims to make waste management more local and resource-focused.

The initiative demonstrates how bringing processing closer to the problem can create practical solutions for handling different categories of waste.

Switcheko treats waste as a resource while supporting recycling and reducing long-distance transport.

The initiative shows how technology can enable more decentralised and sustainable waste management.
