Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has officially tendered his resignation with immediate effect, citing medical advice and the need to prioritise his health. He submitted his resignation to the Hon’ble President of India under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.
In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar expressed deep gratitude for her unwavering support and the cordial working relationship shared during his tenure.
He also extended his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers, acknowledging their cooperation and the invaluable learning he gained while in office.
Dhankhar noted the warmth and trust he had received from Members of Parliament, which he stated would remain cherished and embedded in his memory. He also acknowledged the ‘invaluable experiences and insights’ he had acquired while serving in the country’s second-highest constitutional office.
The outgoing Vice-President reflected on the privilege of witnessing India’s ‘remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development’ during what he termed a transformative period in the nation’s history. His letter described the experience as a ‘true honour’.
“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” VP Jagdeep Dhankhar wrote in his parting note.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, who took office as the 14th Vice-President of India in August 2022, had served with distinction as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and contributed significantly to parliamentary proceedings and public discourse.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Prime Minister’s Office have not yet issued any official statement regarding the next steps or interim arrangements.
Political analysts have noted the timing of the resignation, just months after the 2024 general elections, as significant.
His resignation has marked the end of a notable chapter in Indian political and constitutional life, with tributes and wishes for recovery pouring in from across the political spectrum.
