She Had No Shoes, But She Had A Dream: Kavita Devi Runs For Her Children

Kavita Devi stood out during a Home Guard recruitment run in Ramgarh, Jharkhand, where she ran 1,600 metres barefoot while wearing a saree.

A resident of Soso village in Dulmi block, Kavita hopes to join the Home Guard to secure a better future for her two children. She did not have running shoes or sportswear, but financial difficulties did not stop her from taking part in the recruitment process.

A video of her barefoot run went viral on social media, with many people praising her determination and resilience.

Kavita lost her husband around three years ago and has since been raising their two children. For her, securing a Home Guard position is not simply about finding employment. It is an opportunity to support her children’s education and provide her family with greater financial security.

Kavita reportedly travels around eight kilometres from her village to Ramgarh’s Sido-Kanhu ground for training. Before leaving for the field, she completes her household responsibilities.

Her story prompted residents and people associated with her training to step forward. They provided Kavita with a jersey, running shoes and other sports equipment to help her prepare for the recruitment process.

Ramgarh has proposed recruitment for 284 Home Guard posts, with 50 per cent of the positions reserved for women.

For Kavita, the 1,600-metre run represents far more than a recruitment test. Every step reflects her determination to become self-reliant, provide for her children and build a more secure future despite limited resources. Her barefoot run has since become a powerful example of perseverance and courage.
