Doctors at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital completed a second post-mortem examination of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg on Tuesday morning.
The procedure begins at 8 AM with a team that includes experts from AIIMS Guwahati. This follow-up autopsy was ordered after public appeals and conducted with the consent of the singer’s wife, Garima Garg.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says the decision for a second examination arises from widespread suspicions surrounding Garg’s sudden death in Singapore while swimming last week.
He told reporters that the initial autopsy conducted overseas was impartial, while acknowledging the strong public sentiment in Assam.
Additionally, he confirms that Union Minister Pabitra Margherita coordinates with Garima Garg before the state proceeds.
Schools and colleges across Assam remain closed today as a mark of respect for the late artist. Government offices in Kamrup district will also remain closed tomorrow.
The state government arranges a live broadcast of the funeral for those unable to attend in person.
The funeral procession begins from the Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati and proceeds to Sonapur on the outskirts of the city, where the last rites will be performed later in the day.
The Assam government announces plans to build a memorial for Garg at the Sonapur site following the rituals.
Chief Minister Sarma, along with Pabitra Margherita and other ministers, pays homage to the singer late on Monday night.
The final farewell marks the culmination of public mourning for one of Assam’s most beloved cultural icons, whose voice and work defined generations of music lovers across the region.
