Pet Dog Killed Inside Lift: Bengaluru Domestic Worker Arrested After CCTV Footage Surfaces

In a deeply disturbing incident, Bengaluru Police arrested Pushpalatha, a domestic worker, for allegedly killing a pet dog named Goofy inside a lift of an apartment building.

The accused was taken into custody after CCTV footage surfaced, showing her swinging and smashing the puppy against the lift floor by its leash.

The video, which quickly circulated on social media, captured the brutal act in detail.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 31 but came to light on Monday, when the pet’s owner, Raashi Poojari, lodged a formal police complaint after reviewing the footage.

Initially, Pushpalatha claimed that the puppy had ‘accidentally fallen’ while exiting the lift. However, when Raashi questioned the building’s security staff, their conflicting statements prompted her to verify the CCTV recordings, which revealed the truth.

Owner’s Heartbreaking Account

Speaking to the media, Raashi, a college student, recounted the traumatic experience.

“I had hired her to take care of Goofy while I was at college. She was paid ₹25,000 a month. On that day, she took him out for a walk and returned within a minute, saying the pet wasn’t waking up,” Raashi said, struggling to hold back tears.

She added that there had been no prior dispute with the caretaker and no sign of aggression or neglect.

“There was absolutely no issue. The pet never bit anyone or caused any trouble. She killed him for no reason. I can’t understand why,” she said.

After performing the final rites for her beloved pet at Kengeri, Raashi began to grow suspicious of the caretaker’s indifferent behaviour.

“That evening, I spoke to the security staff, who said the incident might have happened inside the lift. When I checked the footage, I was shocked to see what she had done,” she said.

The CCTV footage shows Pushpalatha repeatedly hurling the small dog against the floor, an act that has left pet owners and animal rights activists across the city horrified.

Police Action and Investigation

Following the complaint, the Bengaluru Police registered a case under sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and arrested Pushpalatha.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accused had been working in the household for over a month and was responsible for the pet’s daily care.

Authorities are now investigating the motive behind the cruel act. Police sources confirmed that the accused offered no clear explanation for her actions during questioning.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with animal welfare groups demanding stricter enforcement of animal cruelty laws and harsher penalties for such offences.

The heartbreaking death of Goofy has reignited debate over the need for stronger legal protection for animals in India.

Animal rights organisations in Bengaluru have urged authorities to ensure swift justice and raise awareness about responsible pet care and accountability for caretakers.

As the investigation continues, the city mourns the loss of an innocent life — a stark reminder of the importance of compassion and vigilance in safeguarding animals from abuse.
