Kanchha Sherpa, Last Surviving Member Of 1953 Everest Team, Dies At 89

Kanchha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the legendary team that first summited Mount Everest in 1953, has passed away at the age of 89.

He had been unwell for some time and died early Thursday at his home in Kapan, Kathmandu, confirmed Phur Gelje Sherpa, President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

“With his passing, there are no longer any surviving members of that legendary climbing team, which is a great loss for the entire mountaineering community,” Phur Gelje Sherpa said.

Kanchha’s last rites are scheduled for October 20, in accordance with Sherpa traditions. He is survived by two sons, two daughters, and their children.

A Young Pioneer of Everest

Born in March 1937, Kanchha was only 17 when he joined the 35-member expedition that ultimately saw Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reach the summit of the 8,848.86-metre peak on May 29, 1953.

Kanchha was one of three Sherpas who reached the final camp before the summit push, playing a crucial supporting role in the historic ascent.

In his later years, he continued to work as a high-altitude guide, sharing his vast knowledge and experience with climbers from around the world.

During a 2024 media interview, Kanchha expressed concerns about overcrowding and pollution on Mount Everest.

He urged visitors to respect the mountain, which the Sherpas revere as the Mother Goddess, and he lamented that people often under-recognise the Sherpas’ pivotal contributions to the 1953 expedition.

Legacy and Tribute

The Nepal Mountaineering Association hailed Kanchha Sherpa as a ‘historic and legendary figure’, noting that his passing closes a remarkable chapter in mountaineering history.

“The Nepali tourism industry mourns the loss of this historic and legendary figure. His absence leaves an irreplaceable void,” the Association said in a condolence message.

They also shared a tribute on X, stating, “Heartfelt Condolences! The Nepali tourism industry will miss you dearly. Rest in eternal peace, legend.”

Kanchha Sherpa’s life remains an enduring symbol of courage, resilience, and devotion to the mountains, inspiring generations of climbers and adventurers worldwide.
