IMD Issues Red, Orange Alerts For Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Across Several States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued district-wise nowcast warnings on Tuesday, alerting residents across several states to thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall and gusty winds during the next two to three hours.

The weather department placed Punjab’s Patiala district under a red alert, which signals severe weather requiring immediate action. It forecast thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour and gusty winds reaching nearly 60 kmph. Officials advised residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The IMD also issued orange alerts for districts likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning, winds of 40–60 kmph and moderate to heavy rainfall of between 5 mm and 15 mm per hour or more.

In Punjab, the alert covers Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Sangrur and SAS Nagar.

The affected districts in Uttar Pradesh include Amethi, Ayodhya, Barabanki, Fatehpur, Hardoi, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Lucknow, Pratapgarh, Raebareli and Unnao.

The warning also covers Kasaragod in Kerala; Dakshin Kannada, Shivamogga and Udupi in Karnataka; and six districts each in Madhya Pradesh and Manipur.

The IMD placed parts of West Bengal, Nagaland, Assam, Haryana and Uttarakhand under orange alerts.

Officials urged residents to stay vigilant, avoid sheltering beneath trees or weak structures and check road conditions before travelling. They also advised people to stay away from areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.

The IMD asked residents to follow instructions from local authorities and disaster management agencies. It continues to monitor the evolving weather conditions and will issue further district-level updates through its official weather portal.
