Dust Storms And Rain Cool Delhi-NCR After Heatwave Spike

A sudden spell of dust storms followed by rain brought relief to residents across Delhi NCR on Wednesday morning, after days of intense heat that had pushed temperatures to nearly 44.5°C earlier this week.

The weather changed rapidly in the early hours as dark clouds gathered and strong winds swept across the region.

The shift was driven by a Western Disturbance, which led to thunderstorms and a noticeable drop in temperature within a short span.

According to forecasts, the day’s maximum temperature, earlier expected to hover around 41°C, is now likely to remain closer to 38°C due to the rainfall.

The Regional Weather Forecast Centre had predicted light to moderate showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph across Delhi and adjoining areas.

Neighbouring regions in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan also experienced similar conditions. Areas such as Sonipat, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Rewari, Palwal, and Hisar, along with Meerut, Hapur and Bulandshahr, and parts of Alwar and Kotputli, were likely to receive rainfall with thunderstorm activity.

Additional pockets, including Jind, Gohana, Safidon, Hansi, Tosham and Shamli, were also likely to witness light showers as weather systems remained active across northwestern India.

While the rainfall brought respite from the heat, dust-laden winds reduced visibility in several areas during the morning hours.

Despite the change in weather, air quality remained a concern. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board showed the Air Quality Index at 260, placing it in the ‘poor’ category.

Meteorologists noted that such fluctuations are typical during the pre-monsoon period, when western disturbances interact with rising temperatures, often resulting in short spells of storms and rain across northern parts of the country.
