Delhi Weather Update: Rainfall Brings Relief From Heat, IMD Forecasts Thunderstorms And Strong Winds

Residents of Delhi experienced a welcome change in weather on Monday morning as steady rainfall swept across the city, easing the recent period of high temperatures.

According to the India Meteorological Department, cloudy skies will likely persist through the day, accompanied by light showers at intervals.

Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph, with occasional gusts reaching 60 kmph, are also likely, particularly during the early hours. Further rainfall is anticipated later in the evening.

The rainfall has led to a noticeable dip in temperatures. Daytime highs will likely remain between 32°C and 34°C, while minimum temperatures may settle between 22°C and 24°C, marking a significant drop for this time of year.

In its broader outlook for May, the IMD has forecast above-average rainfall across the country, estimating precipitation levels to exceed 110 per cent of the long-term average.

While several regions may see normal or slightly lower daytime temperatures, parts of peninsular India, the northeast and the northwest could still record higher-than-usual heat levels.

Night temperatures will likely remain elevated, though some central and northwestern areas may see relatively cooler nights.

The weather agency has also warned of a possible increase in heatwave days in specific regions, including areas along the Himalayan foothills, sections of the eastern coast, and states such as Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Despite the rainfall, air quality in Delhi remained in the ‘moderate’ category, with Air Quality Index (AQI) readings recorded between 85 and 142 at various monitoring locations across the city.
