Delhi-NCR woke up to a chilly Saturday morning as unusually low temperatures and persistent rainfall brought winter-like conditions to the region.

The National Capital recorded its coldest October day in 75 years on Friday, with the maximum temperature dropping to 20.7 degrees Celsius.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category on Saturday.

Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 110 at 8 AM. Monitoring stations reported varying pollution levels across the city.

Burari recorded an AQI of 65, Ghoga 46, Uttam Nagar 92, Vasundhara Enclave 101 and Punjabi Bagh 176. Other areas included Shadipur at 131, Sirifort at 116, Chandni Chowk at 128, ITO at 128 and Anand Vihar at 110. Mundka recorded 143, Jahangirpuri 188, Vivek Vihar 141, Rohini 147 and Bawana 142.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Safdarjung, Delhi’s base weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 20.7 degrees Celsius on Friday.

This was 10.3 degrees below normal and marked the lowest October maximum temperature at the station since 1951.

Persistent rainfall over two days brought the temperature down sharply.

Friday emerged as October’s wettest day in four years and the sixth-wettest since 1951.

Safdarjung recorded 123.3 mm of cumulative rainfall by 8:30 AM, against the monthly normal of 15.1 mm.

Relative humidity reached 100 per cent during both morning and evening hours. Shallow fog further intensified the winter-like conditions.

Delhi recorded an AQI of 60 on Friday, its cleanest October day since October 10, 2022, when the index stood at 44.

According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Delhi’s average AQI for October stood at 167, marking its lowest monthly average for the month since 2015.
