Weather conditions across the Delhi NCR have shifted abruptly, with residents facing unusually high temperatures for April alongside declining air quality levels.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning from 21 to 24 April, noting that daytime temperatures have already climbed to 41°C, with minimum readings around 23°C.
Forecasts indicate a further rise, with maximum temperatures likely to reach 43°C over the next two days before remaining elevated through 24 April.
Meteorologists have cautioned that the heat will likely persist beyond the afternoon, extending into evening hours, a sign of the severity of the current spell.
A marginal dip is projected towards the weekend, with temperatures easing slightly to around 41°C on 25 and 26 April, accompanied by partly cloudy skies. The relief will remain limited.
Alongside the heat, pollution levels remain a concern across the region. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in several parts of Delhi has stayed within the ‘poor’ range, including areas such as Anand Vihar and Ashok Vihar.
Neighbouring cities are also experiencing similar conditions. In Noida, AQI readings across multiple sectors have remained elevated, while Ghaziabad has reported even worse air quality in certain pockets.
The locality of Loni recorded levels in the ‘very poor’ category, with other areas such as Vasundhara and Indirapuram also showing concerning readings.
The combination of extreme heat and pollution has increased health risks for residents.
Experts recommend limiting outdoor exposure during peak hours, maintaining hydration, and using protective masks to reduce the impact of poor air quality.
