Delhi-NCR is likely to experience a sudden change in weather conditions after the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert forecasting rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across the region.
According to the IMD, the skies will remain generally cloudy throughout the day, with light rainfall likely during the forenoon hours.
Weather activity may intensify during the afternoon, evening and night, bringing thunderstorms, lightning strikes and strong winds with speeds reaching up to 40 to 50 kmph.
The department said the maximum temperature in Delhi is likely to remain around 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may settle near 27 degrees Celsius.
Strong winds and rainfall are expected to provide temporary relief from the prevailing heat conditions across the National Capital Region.
The IMD stated that several areas could witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph during the day.
Weather conditions may become more severe later, with squally winds and lightning activity expected in different parts of Delhi-NCR.
Authorities advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid standing in open spaces or taking shelter under trees and electric poles.
Officials warned that heavy winds and rainfall could disrupt traffic movement and advised farmers and construction workers to take precautions.
The IMD said partly cloudy skies and thunderstorms may continue on May 13, while temperatures are likely to rise gradually from May 14, with clear skies returning later in the week.
Weather experts linked the sudden change to a Western Disturbance and local weather activity affecting north India.
Rainfall and strong winds may also improve air quality across Delhi-NCR, with AQI levels remaining in the moderate category in areas such as Anand Vihar, Rohini, Wazirpur and Dwarka Sector-8.
