Delhi-NCR is expected to face severe heatwave conditions this week, with temperatures likely to rise to nearly 46 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather agency has issued an orange alert for the region, warning of prolonged and intense heat in the coming days.
The IMD said Delhi, along with Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, will continue to face extreme heat throughout the week. It also warned of unusually warm nights in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, with temperatures staying high even after sunset and increasing health risks.
On Tuesday, Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius, which is around 4.7 degrees above normal and the highest so far this year.
Other parts of the capital recorded even higher readings, with Ridge station reaching 46.5 degrees Celsius, Ayanagar at 45.5 degrees and Lodhi Road at 45.2 degrees.
The extreme heat also affected air quality in the capital.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) rose to 208 by late afternoon, marking the worst level since late April, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
In response, the CAQM imposed Stage 1 restrictions under GRAP.
Delhi has already recorded its hottest day of the season this week, with temperatures near 44°C in several areas.
Meteorologists said Tuesday marked the fourth heatwave day of the year.
The IMD forecast temperatures around 44°C until May 25, with strong surface winds in the afternoon and evening.
Authorities advised residents to avoid peak-hour outdoor activity, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illness.
