Delhi Braces For More Rain As IMD Issues Orange Alert After Hottest July Day In Two Years

Residents across the national capital woke up to hot and humid conditions on Monday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, forecasting generally cloudy skies with moderate rainfall across Delhi and adjoining regions.

The alert warns of sustained rainfall with high humidity, offering limited relief from recent heat.

It follows Delhi’s hottest July day in two years, when temperatures hit 38.6°C on Sunday despite light rain.

The maximum stayed two degrees above normal and just below the 38.8°C recorded on July 11, 2024. The minimum remained high at 29.2°C, the highest July minimum since July 2, 2024.

Rainfall was uneven, with Chhatarpur receiving the highest at 49 mm, though it also experienced waterlogging and disruption.

Gurugram recorded 35 mm of rain, followed by Mehrauli at 18 mm, Greater Noida at 17 mm, Najafgarh at 8 mm, and Janakpuri at 7 mm. Humidity peaked at 92 per cent, increasing discomfort across the region.

IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with moderate rain for Monday. Temperatures are expected to hover around 32°C maximum and 27°C minimum, offering slight relief but continued humidity.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category, with an AQI of 155 at 8 PM on Sunday, according to the Sameer app.

The CPCB classifies this range as acceptable but potentially uncomfortable for sensitive groups.

Experts said the changing weather is due to a shifting monsoon trough influenced by a low-pressure system over Odisha and a cyclonic circulation over central and northwest India.

They added that the system is likely to bring more widespread monsoon rain in the coming days.
