Wish You Didn’t Have To Share Your Number On WhatsApp? That’s About To Change

WhatsApp will soon introduce a new username feature that will allow users to communicate without sharing their mobile numbers, marking one of the platform’s biggest privacy upgrades.

The Meta-owned messaging service said the feature aims to provide users with greater control over their personal information while making it easier to connect securely.

Unlike the current system, which relies on phone numbers, the upcoming feature will enable users to create and use unique usernames as their primary identity on WhatsApp.

The company has already opened global username reservations ahead of the feature’s wider rollout, expected later this year.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the feature is designed to protect users’ phone number privacy.

WhatsApp explained that people will need to know a user’s exact username to contact them, eliminating the need to exchange mobile numbers.

Users can also change their usernames directly within the app whenever they choose.

WhatsApp said usernames must contain between three and 35 characters and must be globally unique.

The platform may also offer a username generator to help users find an available name.

Users will also be able to set a username key, giving them greater control over who can contact them.

Once available, WhatsApp will hide users’ phone numbers during first-time chats, adding an extra layer of privacy.

The platform is likely to begin username registrations soon, with a phased global rollout.

Users will receive in-app notifications when the feature becomes available in their country, enabling safer communication through personalised usernames.
