WhatsApp Faces Widespread Outage Across India; Users Report Messaging Issues

Popular messaging service WhatsApp faced a significant service disruption in India on Monday, 8 September, leaving thousands of users unable to send messages, upload status updates, or access the platform via desktop or mobile.

The outage, which began around 2:20 PM, quickly became a trending topic on social media as frustrated users shared their experiences online.

Outage-tracking platform Downdetector recorded over 410 reports of disruptions by mid-afternoon.

According to data shared by the website, 54 per cent of users reported server connection problems, 24 per cent faced issues on the desktop version of WhatsApp, and 22 per cent experienced trouble with the mobile app.

Downdetector explained that it only flags an incident when the number of problem reports surpasses normal levels for that time of day.

This marks the latest in a string of outages affecting the Meta-owned platform.

Social Media Flooded with Reactions

As messaging functions stalled, users turned to other platforms to voice their frustration.

On X (formerly Twitter), posts ranged from humorous to exasperated. One user wrote, “Aunties and uncles sending good morning GIFs in the WhatsApp GC—lemme put this bag down and go to bed.”

Another user posted simply, “#WhatsApp is down!!”

Others sought clarity, with one asking, “WhatsApp Web down?”, while responses flooded in confirming the issue was widespread. Another noted, “Yes, it’s not just you. WhatsApp is down globally!”

Despite the growing number of complaints, Meta had not released an official statement on the cause of the outage at the time of writing.

This is not the first time WhatsApp has faced technical issues this year.

In April, the platform went offline for several hours, with 81 per cent of users reporting problems sending messages and 16 per cent experiencing general app issues.

Earlier in February, WhatsApp also suffered a massive global outage, during which users were unable to send messages, connect to WhatsApp Web, or make voice and video calls.

Downdetector registered over 9,000 complaints during that incident.

While Monday’s disruption appeared to be resolved later in the day, users are still awaiting a formal explanation from Meta regarding the root cause.

Until then, WhatsApp’s unexpected downtime continues to raise concerns about platform stability, especially given its essential role in communication for millions across India and beyond.
