Nothing Spins Off CMF As India-Focused Tech Company

Nothing will spin off its CMF sub-brand into a standalone, India-based consumer technology company, CEO Carl Pei announced on Monday.

The new entity will have majority Indian ownership, its headquarters in India and dedicated teams for research and development.

Nothing will retain a stake in CMF and continue as a strategic partner.

The new company will also draw on Nothing’s existing engineering capabilities, operating-system expertise, supplier relationships and global brand experience.

Pei said the move aims to take India’s electronics industry beyond manufacturing and strengthen its role in product development and research.

He highlighted India’s growing smartphone manufacturing base, large domestic market and engineering talent as key factors behind the decision.

The company has set an ambitious long-term target of reaching 100 million smartphones annually.

Pei said such scale could allow CMF to work more closely with component suppliers and influence the development of new technologies rather than simply source existing components.

The spin-off builds on Nothing’s earlier plans to expand CMF’s operations in India.

In September 2025, Nothing and Indian electronics manufacturer Optiemus Infracom announced a joint venture with an investment of more than $100 million over three years.

The partnership also targeted more than 1,800 jobs while expanding manufacturing, operations and R&D in India.

CMF launched in 2023 as Nothing’s more affordable consumer technology brand. Under the new structure, it will seek to develop products and intellectual property in India while targeting international markets.
