Is AI Quietly Reshaping The Tech Workforce? Cloudflare Cuts 1,100 Jobs

Cloudflare has announced plans to eliminate more than 1,100 positions worldwide as part of a major restructuring exercise linked to the company’s growing use of artificial intelligence.

According to an internal memo sent to employees, the US-based cloud connectivity company said the adoption of AI tools and agents within the organisation has increased sharply in recent months, with usage rising by over 600 per cent in the last three months alone.

The company said teams across engineering, finance, marketing and human resources are now increasingly relying on AI systems for routine operational tasks.

Cloudflare described the restructuring as an effort to redesign the organisation for what it called the ‘agentic AI era’ rather than a traditional cost-cutting measure.

In the memo, the company said the layoffs were not related to employee performance and stressed that the decision did not reflect the abilities or contributions of affected workers.

Cloudflare also informed staff that impacted employees would receive official communication through both company and personal email accounts regarding the restructuring process.

The company said departing employees would be provided severance packages that include full base salary through the end of 2026, continued healthcare coverage in the US until year-end and additional equity-related benefits.

Employees who had not yet completed their one-year vesting period will also receive prorated equity benefits as part of the separation package, according to the memo.

Cloudflare stated that the restructuring would be completed in a single phase to avoid prolonged uncertainty and multiple rounds of job cuts.

The company said it is reorganising its operations to remain competitive as artificial intelligence rapidly changes workflows and business models across the technology sector.

According to the memo, the broader transformation strategy intends to make the organisation ‘faster and more innovative’ while expanding investment in AI-focused products and services.
