Indian Life Sciences Chiefs Expand AI & Digital Innovation: KPMG Report

Life sciences leaders in India are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation, according to a KPMG report released Friday. The survey covered 110 global life sciences executives.

KPMG said Indian CEOs are investing heavily in workforce skills. They are also pursuing strategic mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

These steps aim to ensure sustainable growth and strengthen India’s position globally.

“India’s life sciences sector is moving from aspiration to execution,” said Vijay Chawla, Partner and Head, Life Sciences, KPMG India. “CEOs are scaling AI, embracing digital change, pursuing M&A with focus, and enhancing workforce capabilities.”

Chawla added that combining innovation with efficiency and leveraging India’s talent pool positions the sector for global leadership in a fast-evolving healthcare ecosystem.

Globally, over 80 per cent of life sciences CEOs view AI as essential for growth. They see it as key to reducing emissions and boosting energy efficiency.

The report highlighted a clear shift from experimentation to execution. Leaders now integrate AI, transform their businesses strategically via M&A, and reskill workforces to drive innovation and efficiency.

Workforce Skills Fuel Expansion

Around 86 per cent of CEOs plan moderate-to-high M&A activity over the next three years. Eighty per cent are adjusting growth strategies to navigate complex market challenges.

The report noted 73 per cent of leaders will dedicate 10-20 per cent of technology budgets to AI initiatives. Sixty-five per cent expect measurable returns on these investments within three years.

Cybersecurity remains a top concern, with 84 per cent highlighting its importance as AI adoption accelerates.

Workforce readiness is also critical, with 85 per cent believing skill development is essential to achieving AI goals.

ESG initiatives rank as the second-highest operational priority. Nearly 80 per cent of CEOs believe AI can reduce emissions and enhance energy efficiency.

Sustainability is translating into tangible operational and financial gains.

The KPMG report signals a decisive era for India’s life sciences industry.

Executives are leveraging technology, talent, and strategic growth to secure leadership and long-term sector sustainability.
