Sam Altman has strongly endorsed India’s expanding influence in artificial intelligence, stating that the country holds every essential component to emerge as a ‘full-stack AI leader’.
The OpenAI chief confirmed plans to deepen the company’s engagement and partnerships across India.
He made these remarks ahead of the Global AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled to commence on 16 February at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
In a media interaction, Altman disclosed that India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market globally, following the United States.
He reported that the country records 100 million weekly active users of ChatGPT. India also accounts for the highest number of student users worldwide.
He further noted that India ranks fourth internationally in the adoption of Prism, OpenAI’s complementary platform designed for scientific research and LaTeX-based collaboration.
Altman affirmed that OpenAI aims to build artificial intelligence in India, with India, and for India.
He emphasised equitable access. The company has provided several of its tools free of charge to remove financial, educational and technological barriers.
Last year, OpenAI inaugurated its first Indian office in Delhi. The organisation intends to expand its footprint further during the current year.
Altman revealed that more than 200 nonprofit leaders across four Indian cities recently received training to deploy ChatGPT effectively and enhance operational impact.
The OpenAI chief confirmed that he will visit India next week. He signalled prospective collaborations with the Government to broaden AI access and amplify its societal benefits.
Altman outlined a three-pronged framework to embed AI across communities. He described ‘Access’ as universal availability of tools.
He defined ‘Adoption’ as integration into schools, clinics and small enterprises.
Sam Altman characterised ‘Agency’ as equipping individuals with confidence and skills to apply AI for informed decision-making and innovation.
His remarks position India as a pivotal actor in the evolving global AI ecosystem.
