Google has introduced one of the biggest upgrades to its AI-powered learning platform, NotebookLM, by launching the new Cinematic Video Overviews feature.
The update enables users to generate fully animated and immersive videos from their research sources, marking a significant shift from the platform’s earlier video overview capability that produced only static slides.
The new feature represents a major step in Google’s efforts to expand the creative and educational capabilities of its artificial intelligence ecosystem.
NotebookLM has emerged as one of the company’s most frequently updated AI products in recent months, with several enhancements rolled out across both its website and mobile applications.
Previously, NotebookLM generated narrated slides that summarised uploaded documents through its Video Overviews feature.
With the new Cinematic Video Overviews mode, Google now creates dynamic videos combining narration, animation, and storytelling, making the content resemble short documentaries or animated explainers.
The company said the feature helps users understand complex information through visual storytelling. It uses several AI models, including Gemini 3, Nano Banana Pro, and Veo 3.
In a blog post, Pete Aykroyd said Gemini acts as a creative director by generating scripts, prompts, and selecting the most suitable narrative and visual style while maintaining consistency.
Currently, Cinematic Video Overviews are available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers and support English-language sources for users aged 18 and above on the website and mobile apps.
In a post on X, NotebookLM said wider access for Pro users remains on its roadmap, though no timeline has been announced.
