A major security flaw in Zoom has exposed users to a potentially serious cyber threat.

Researchers at cybersecurity firm A Security discovered the vulnerability and demonstrated how attackers could compromise devices during Zoom meetings.

The flaw centred on Zoom’s annotation feature, which lets participants draw on a shared screen.

An attacker could exploit the feature to execute malicious code on a victim’s device.

The attack could enable criminals to steal sensitive information, activate cameras or microphones and install malware. More concerningly, victims did not need to take any action.

Researchers found no visible warning to indicate that a device had been compromised.

A security firm said researchers uncovered the working exploit using fewer than 20 prompts on publicly available artificial intelligence models. They reportedly developed it within a single day.

The discovery highlights how AI tools can lower the barrier for sophisticated cyberattacks.

Researchers noted that creating such an exploit traditionally required highly skilled teams, substantial resources and considerable time.

Zoom responded by releasing a security update on Tuesday. The vulnerability affected the platform across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS devices.
