Apple’s First Foldable iPhone May Favour Compact Design Over Large Cover Screen

Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone continues to attract attention as new reports suggest the device may feature a notably compact outer display.

According to industry leaks, the cover screen could measure around 5.3 inches, making it smaller than most modern smartphones and even more compact than Apple’s discontinued iPhone mini, which exited the market in 2022.

This design choice has triggered debate, as rival foldable smartphones typically rely on larger cover displays that function much like regular phones when folded.

Adding to the discussion, designer Ben Geskin recently shared concept images and videos of a mock-up based on the reported dimensions.

The printed model highlights how compact Apple’s proposed outer screen may be when compared with foldable devices from competing brands.

While other manufacturers promote their cover displays as primary screens, Apple appears to be exploring a different philosophy.

The company may prioritise portability and a focused unfolded experience over extensive use in folded mode.

Reports also indicate that the foldable iPhone could feature a 4:3 inner display, similar to the screen ratio used in iPads. This format may suit reading, video playback and split-screen multitasking.

A smaller cover display would allow Apple to retain this shape, instead of adopting a square inner panel that could restrict usability.

Folded Mode Seen as Secondary Use Case

Industry observers believe Apple may treat the folded state as a secondary mode.

Users could rely on the outer screen for notifications, quick replies and brief interactions, while opening the device for longer sessions and richer tasks.

The design strategy has drawn attention due to the device’s expected price. Industry estimates suggest the foldable iPhone could cost between $2,000 and $2,500, potentially making it the most expensive iPhone ever released.

While the compact outer screen may raise questions at that price point, reports indicate Apple may position the device closer to a foldable tablet than a traditional smartphone.

Apple has not officially confirmed any details. However, current speculation points to a possible launch in autumn 2026.

Some analysts, including those at Mizuho Securities, suggest the timeline could extend to 2027 as Apple continues to refine the final design.
