Apple Introduces HomeView Smart Display With Personalised AI Features

Apple has unveiled its long-awaited smart display, the HomeView, marking a major step in the company’s expansion into smart home technology.

Priced at $299, the device combines a compact screen with a speaker base, allowing users to make video calls, view photos, follow recipes and access information through Siri AI.

The HomeView will launch in eight countries: the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and India. Pre-orders are open, with shipments scheduled to begin on November 13. Apple has also introduced a wall-mounted version priced at $299.

The device acts as a smart home hub, Matter controller and Thread Border Router, allowing users to control compatible Apple Home and Matter devices. Apple’s wider smart home push also includes new cameras, thermostats and a door lock.

Siri AI enables users to ask general questions, manage smart home devices and access information using natural language.

With an eligible iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network, facial recognition lets HomeView display personalised messages, calendar events and emails. It supports up to six profiles.

The device displays recipes, supports FaceTime calls through Center Stage and streams HomeKit Secure Video feeds.

Customisable layouts include photos, clocks, app widgets and smart home controls.

Its aluminium body houses a Liquid Retina display with True Tone and brightness levels from 0.3 to 500 nits.

It comes in four colours: silver, starlight, rose pink and space grey. Its speaker system includes two drivers, a woofer and two passive radiators.

Users can also access Apple apps such as Calendar, Reminders, Messages and Music. Some third-party audio services, including Spotify and Audible, are supported, although video app availability remains limited.

The wall-mounted version offers plug-in, in-wall power and Power over Ethernet installation options. While both models share the same features, their placement may influence how households use them.

However, questions remain about how reliably the device will recognise different users and switch between personal profiles. Some security controls require authentication, which could affect convenience.

Early demonstrations suggest the HomeView offers close integration with the iPhone, but its success will depend on whether users embrace a shared household screen for personal tasks and smart home management.
