Amazon Says Anthropic AI Models Will Remain Available On AWS For Most Customers

Amazon has announced that it will continue offering Anthropic’s artificial intelligence models to its cloud customers, except for workloads linked to the US Department of War (DoW).

The statement came a day after a federal agency classified Anthropic as a ‘supply chain risk’, a decision the AI company has said it will challenge in court.

An Amazon Web Services (AWS) spokesperson confirmed that customers will continue to access Anthropic’s Claude models for most applications.

“AWS customers and partners can continue to use Claude for all workloads not associated with the Department of War,” the spokesperson said.

AWS said it is helping customers transition to alternative services for Department of War workloads using Anthropic technologies.

Amazon’s stance follows similar assurances from Microsoft and Google that Anthropic’s Claude models will remain available for non-defensive uses.

The coordinated response reflects continued industry support for Anthropic despite rising political scrutiny.

Last week, US President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology, and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon would phase out the systems within six months after negotiations collapsed over concerns about surveillance and autonomous weapons.

Amazon remains one of Anthropic’s largest investors, committing about $8 billion since 2023.

Anthropic relies on AWS for cloud infrastructure and plans to use 500,000 Trainium 2 chips under Project Rainier, an $11 billion AWS data centre project. Its Claude models are available through AWS Bedrock and GovCloud for sensitive government workloads.
