The debut season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is starting from today i.e March 4, at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The season opener between Ashleigh Gardner’s Gujarat Giants (GJ) and Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians (MI) is set to begin at 7:30 PM IST. Meanwhile, the opening ceremony for WPL 2023 will begin at 5:30 PM IST. The opening ceremony will feature performances by Bollywood superstars Kriti Sanon and Kiara Advani, as well as musician AP Dhillon. Meanwhile, Shankar Mahadevan will sing the official World League anthem.
On February 23 in Mumbai, the WPL 2023 auction took place, during which 409 players were put up for bid. The most expensive purchase was Smriti Mandhana, which was acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for 3.4 crores. The second-most costly purchase, Ashleigh Gardner, was made by GG for 3.2 crores. The most expensive Indian player was the all-arounder Deepti Sharma, who signed with UP Warriorz for 2.6 crores.
The five teams will compete in four home and four away league games during the event. The league phase’s top finishers advance directly to the championship. The second and third-placed teams will compete against one another in the Eliminator for a spot in the championship game.
