Will Shubman Gill Surpass Virat Kohli’s 973 Run Record? Here’s What Sunil Gavaskar Has To Say!

Shubman Gill, representing Gujarat Titans (GT), has been in outstanding form this season and has become the second Indian batsman to surpass 800 runs in a single IPL season. The 23-year-old has scored three centuries in his last four innings, playing a pivotal role in GT’s progress to the championship game.

Furthermore, Shubman Gill is on the verge of achieving a remarkable feat set by his idol, Virat Kohli. The talented young Indian opener, Shubman Gill, is currently closely pursuing the all-time highest runs scored in a single IPL season. With a phenomenal tally of 851 runs in just 16 innings this season, Gill has taken hold of the coveted Orange Cap. Maintaining an outstanding average of 60.78 and an impressive strike rate of 156.43, he has emerged as one of the tournament’s top performers.

Gill is trailing Jos Buttler’s leading score of 863 runs by a mere 12 runs, and he remains 122 runs away from surpassing Virat Kohli’s record-breaking total of 973 runs. As the IPL season progresses, cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate Gill’s performances and wonder if he can bridge the gap to claim the record for most runs in a single IPL season. The young prodigy’s talent, determination, and admiration for his idol make his pursuit even more compelling, and fans eagerly await to witness if Shubman Gill can etch his name in IPL history by surpassing Kohli’s monumental record.

Thanks to 4 hundreds and 7 fifty-pluses, Virat Kohli eclipsed the previous mark in 2016 by scoring 973 runs in a single IPL season. On the other hand, Buttler scored 863 runs last year while also hitting 4 centuries. To surpass Virat Kohli’s record, Shubman Gill will need to hit another century and amass more than 122 runs against Chennai Super Kings in the championship game. Sunil Gavaskar, a former cricketer for India, thinks Gill can pull it off given his current form.

Shubman Gill’s historic IPL record bid depends on Gujarat’s batting first, says Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar told India Today, “Yes, that can happen. It appears doable. Gill will have a great opportunity if Gujarat chooses to bat first. Chennai will appear incapable of hitting 122 if they bat first and are all out for 180. Records are intended to be broken, though.

Gavaskar said, “And this is a record unlike Sachin Tendulkar’s run in Test cricket or Muttiah Muralitharan’s 800 Test wickets, those are the ones which will be very difficult to break.” He then contrasted the current record with Tendulkar’s Test runs and Muralidharan’s 800 wickets. However, 122 runs are the main focus here. If Gujarat bats first, that will undoubtedly occur.
