WC 2023: Pakistan’s world cup qualification scenario “near to impossible”

Following New Zealand’s convincing five-wicket victory against Sri-Lanka, Pakistan’s path to the semifinals became more difficult.

New Zealand took their tally to 10 points in 9 matches, 2 more than Afghanistan and Pakistan who have a game in hand. It was also their 8th successive win for New Zealand over Sri Lanka as they all but sealed their spot in the semi-finals for the 4th successive time in ODI World Cups.

The victory increased New Zealand’s lead in the standings in terms of net run rate, Pakistan has a lot to catch up with, but it can be the Kiwi’s at ten points.

India, Australia and South Africa have already booked their place in the World Cup semi-finals. The victory increased New Zealand’s lead in the standings in terms of net run rate, Pakistan has a lot to catch up with, but it can be the Kiwi’s at ten points.

Pakistan is set to play their last league stage game against England on November 11. New Zealand with NRR of 0.74 comfortably position themselves at No 4 position in the points table.

While Pakistan needs to win the game against England by 287 runs to position themselves at No 4 with NRR of +0.75, or if they bowl first they need to chase the target with 284 balls to spare.

Pakistan’s only realistic chance is to bat first, reach 400, hold England to 112, and then surpass New Zealand in net run rate. India and the fourth-placed team in the standings will play at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
