Teenage cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stunned the cricketing world in Dambulla when he struck the fastest fifty in List A cricket during the Tri-Series final between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday.
The 15-year-old opener reached the milestone in only 11 balls, setting a new benchmark for explosive batting in the format. He surpassed Sri Lanka’s Kaushalya Weeraratne’s 21-year-old record of a 12-ball fifty, showcasing exceptional timing and power from the very beginning of his innings.
Sooryavanshi attacked the bowling immediately, hitting five fours and five sixes on his way to the landmark, marking his first fifty for India A.
Sooryavanshi continued his aggressive stroke play even after reaching the fifty, but Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige eventually dismissed him in the ninth over. He finished with 94 runs off 29 deliveries, including 10 fours and eight sixes, leaving a strong impact despite falling short of a century.
Earlier this month, Sooryavanshi’s rapid progress earned him a call-up to India’s T20I squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, along with selection for the Asian Games 2026.
At just 15 years and 71 days, he became the youngest player ever selected for the Indian men’s cricket team, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record.
If Sooryavanshi makes his debut on the tour, he will become the youngest player ever to represent India in men’s international cricket.
Washington Sundar remains the youngest Indian to play a T20 International, debuting at 18 years and 80 days against Sri Lanka in 2017.
Tendulkar also holds the record as India’s youngest ODI debutant, having played against Pakistan in 1989 at 16 years and 238 days.
Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary innings further cements his reputation as one of the most exciting young prospects in Indian cricket.
