Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan etched his name into the record books on Friday by becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to register a Test hundred on Australian soil. His 102-run knock from 189 deliveries helped Bangladesh reach 351/6 by the end of play in Darwin, giving the visitors a 153-run advantage over Australia’s first-innings score of 198.
The right-hander displayed considerable patience throughout his innings and completed his first Test century, relying on solid defence and carefully chosen attacking strokes.
Australia removed Tanzid almost immediately after he reached the milestone. He added just one run before attempting to hit Lyon over the infield, but Mitchell Starc completed the catch at long-off.
Tanzid played a central role in Bangladesh’s recovery after joining forces with Mominul Haque for a 102-run second-wicket stand.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto then partnered Tanzid and helped add 93 runs for the third wicket.
Shanto remained at the crease after Tanzid’s departure and produced an impressive 84 from 126 balls.
Australia eventually used the second new ball to regain some momentum, dismissing Shanto along with two other Bangladesh batters during a four-over spell.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud then steadied Bangladesh with an unbeaten 43-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
Miraz remained unbeaten on 32, while Hasan ended the day on 13 as Bangladesh moved into a commanding position.
Bangladesh’s strong batting effort has significantly changed the complexion of the match after Australia managed only 198 in their first innings.
Bangladesh have shown confidence against Australia’s experienced bowling attack in their first Test in the country since 2003.
Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and veteran spinner Nathan Lyon have found it difficult to consistently break through the Bangladesh batting order.
Australia’s late burst with the second new ball provided their strongest spell of the day, but Mehidy and Hasan ensured Bangladesh retained the upper hand at stumps.
