Sri Lanka Captain Vows To Raise Standards For Women’s World Cup

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu expressed confidence in her team’s preparations for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

She emphasised that playing in familiar sub-continent conditions will give Sri Lanka an edge against other competing international teams.

According to her, the combination of senior experience and young energy offers a strong balance within the squad.

Moreover, Athapaththu underlined that this World Cup presents a golden opportunity to raise Sri Lanka’s cricketing standards significantly higher.

She admitted that every team will arrive determined, but stressed they will never underestimate any potential opponent seriously.

The captain mentioned that their first match against India in Guwahati will demand sharp focus and complete commitment.

Besides, she highlighted that playing in front of home fans in Sri Lanka will inspire players towards exceptional performances.

She firmly believes the support from local crowds provides her team with unmatched motivation and additional emotional strength.

Reflecting on growth, Athapaththu said Sri Lankan women’s cricket has advanced remarkably since the early 1990s foundational period.

She acknowledged that competing consistently in multiple World Cups has transformed the team into genuine challengers on global stages.

For instance, she proudly recalled the 2013 World Cup victory against defending champions England, a landmark success for Sri Lanka.

Additionally, she noted beating India in the same tournament proved the team’s capability to challenge powerful cricketing nations directly.

Athapaththu stressed that those achievements were stepping stones that elevated belief, resilience, and strategic confidence within the squad for years.

Consequently, she affirmed that Sri Lanka has only grown stronger, now capable of confidently competing with any team worldwide.

The captain remains convinced that with preparation, discipline, and unity, Sri Lanka can deliver inspiring performances in this tournament.

Finally, she reiterated that the upcoming World Cup represents both a challenge and an opportunity for Sri Lanka to redefine sporting excellence.
