Spain Storm Into FIFA World Cup Last 16 With Clinical Victory Over Austria

Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after producing a dominant 3-0 victory over Austria.

Mikel Oyarzabal struck twice, while Pedro Porro registered his first international goal as Spain recorded their first World Cup knockout-stage triumph since winning the tournament in 2010.

The result sets up a Round of 16 encounter against the winner of the Portugal-Croatia fixture, which will be played in Dallas on 7 July.

Spain made an aggressive start, with Lamine Yamal testing Austria’s defence within the opening minute. Although Marc Cucurella found the net from a corner, the referee ruled out the goal after spotting a foul on Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 36th minute when Cucurella delivered a low cross into the box, allowing Oyarzabal to guide a first-time effort into the bottom corner and score his third goal of the competition.

Spain nearly doubled their advantage before the interval as Alex Baena’s free-kick rattled the crossbar, while Yamal forced Schlager into another impressive save moments later.

Austria Struggles as Spain Finishes Strong

Austria created a few meaningful opportunities throughout the contest. Michael Gregoritsch failed to connect with Marcel Sabitzer’s dangerous delivery, and substitute Sasa Kalajdzic headed over the bar shortly after entering the match.

Spain extended their lead when Alex Baena’s cross found Pedro Porro, who headed home to score his first goal for the national team.

Oyarzabal then completed his brace by converting another precise cross from Cucurella after David Alaba had cleared a Yamal effort off the goal line.

Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simón produced another assured display to register his fifth consecutive World Cup clean sheet.

His shutout streak reached 519 minutes, eclipsing Walter Zenga’s previous World Cup record of 517 minutes set for Italy in 1990.

The landmark victory reinforced Spain’s status as one of the strongest contenders heading into the knockout rounds.
