Senior Players To Be Rested For Sri Lanka Tour Following T20 World Cup Triumph

Following their victorious T20 World Cup campaign, senior Indian cricketers Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are expect to rest for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour later this month, according to a recent report.

India is set to play three T20Is and three ODIs against Sri Lanka, starting on July 27. The Indian Express reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to rest these key players before they return for the Bangladesh tour. The Bangladesh tour, which begins on September 19, includes two Test matches and three T20Is.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja recently announced their retirements from T20Is after India’s T20 World Cup victory. Despite stepping away from T20Is, they will continue to represent India in other formats. The BCCI is expect to announce the squad for the Sri Lanka tour next week.

“Senior players can take some rest and get ready for the full cricket season ahead. Rohit, Virat, and Bumrah offers rest and will join the team for the Test matches against Bangladesh in September,” a BCCI source told the newspaper.

T20 World Cup

In other developments, the 2024 T20 World Cup marked the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach. Dravid led India to three consecutive ICC finals, including the 2023 World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup, finally breaking the title drought in the Caribbean. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has interviewed Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman for the head coach position, with Gambhir emerging as a leading candidate to succeed Dravid.

Additionally, the BCCI will soon open applications for the team’s support staff positions following the conclusion of the tenures of batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip after the T20 World Cup.

As the Indian cricket team gears up for the new season, the rest period for senior players and the appointment of a new coaching staff will be pivotal in shaping their future performances.
