Samson, Abhishek And Kishan Power India To 255/5 In T20 World Cup Final Against New Zealand

Half-centuries from Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan propelled the India national cricket team to a formidable 255/5 against the New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

Batting on a flat surface composed of mixed soil, India registered the highest total at the venue and the third-highest score in Men’s T20 World Cup history.

The innings was built around an aggressive start by the top order, with all three batters scoring at striking rates that reflected their attacking approach.

Samson led the charge with 89 from 46 balls at a strike rate of 193.47, Abhishek contributed 54 from 25 deliveries at 247.61, while Kishan added 54 off 25 balls with a strike rate of 216.

At different points in the innings, India looked capable of pushing the score close to 280 or more, but New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham slowed the surge with figures of 3 for 46.

Nevertheless, a late burst from Shivam Dube ensured a powerful finish. Dube struck 26 runs from eight balls, including 24 runs in the final over, helping India cross the 250 mark with a strike rate of 325.

New Zealand’s difficulties began early, particularly after the decision to introduce pacer Jacob Duffy in the third over proved costly.

Boundaries began to flow rapidly as India’s batters capitalised on slower deliveries and bowling that drifted away from the stumps.

India, asked to bat first, began cautiously. Samson faced Matt Henry and defended the first four deliveries before launching the fifth over long-on for six.

After Glenn Phillips conceded five runs in the following over. Abhishek responded with a forceful boundary off Duffy. He then drove elegantly over the infield for another four.

Samson also attacked Duffy, sending an inswinger back past the bowler for a boundary.

The batting-friendly pitch soon encouraged both players to accelerate.

The fourth over proved particularly expensive as Lockie Ferguson struggled with control, conceding 24 runs, including wides and multiple boundaries.

Henry’s next over also proved expensive. Abhishek lifted a slower delivery for six, while Samson pulled a short ball over the ropes.

Four wides in the same over highlighted New Zealand’s struggle to maintain discipline.

Abhishek reached his fifty in the sixth over with three fours and a six. He completed the milestone from just 18 balls. India collected 92 runs in the Powerplay.

Captain Mitchell Santner introduced himself into the attack in the seventh over. Samson responded by striking a boundary through the off side.

Abhishek’s innings ended in the eighth over. Rachin Ravindra bowled wide outside off, and the opener edged the ball to the wicketkeeper. He departed for 52.

Kishan then arrived at the crease and quickly continued the attacking pattern, bringing up India’s 100 in 7.2 overs with a controlled on-drive. Several crisp boundaries followed as he maintained the scoring rate.

Samson continued to dominate, raising his third successive T20 World Cup half-century before attacking Ferguson for two sixes and a four. He then struck Ravindra for three consecutive sixes in the 14th over.

By the 15th over, India had already surpassed the highest total previously recorded in a T20 World Cup final. Kishan also reached his fifty in 23 balls. He achieved the milestone with a series of bold strokes.

Neesham then provided a brief comeback for New Zealand. Samson fell for 89 after hitting a full toss to long-on, Kishan followed for 54, and captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a golden duck after edging to deep backward square leg.

Hardik Pandya briefly counterattacked with a six and a four off Henry before falling to a slower bouncer, caught at cover.

Dube then accelerated at the death. He hit Neesham for boundaries and sixes. He finished the innings with a powerful drive through cover.

India eventually closed on 255/5. The hosts collected 24 runs from the final over. The total placed them in a strong position to defend the T20 World Cup title they won in 2024.
