India opener Rohit Sharma has identified the 2027 ODI World Cup as a long-term objective but believes his immediate focus must remain on fitness and current assignments.
Rohit produced a century in Guwahati as India successfully chased West Indies’ 406-run target.
He scored 101 and combined with captain Shubman Gill for a massive 255-run opening partnership, with Gill finishing unbeaten on 223.
Rohit said his priority was to remain physically prepared, continue working hard, and contribute consistently whenever he plays.
“What I want to manifest is that I keep myself capable enough until 2027, so I keep myself fit, keep working hard, and keep performing well in every tournament that comes up,” he told JioStar.
“Because thinking about next October right now is not going to help me play my game,” Rohit said, stressing the need to handle each challenge before moving to the next.
Rohit also backed Gill to develop as captain and urged people not to judge his leadership too quickly.
“Shubman Gill has a great cricketing brain, no doubt about that. He has been captaining for about a year now, so it is unfair to judge him as a captain so early,” he said.
He also underlined the importance of teammates and support staff standing behind the skipper.
Rohit said moving away from the captaincy has not altered his relationship with Gill or his responsibility towards the side.
“Shubman is the captain, but that does not mean I stay away from him or talk less with him,” he said.
He added that the team must give Gill confidence and work collectively towards its objectives.
“It’ll be great to win the upcoming ODI World Cup; that’s all I’ll say,” he said, adding that the experience of lifting a global trophy for India remains difficult to match.
