Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday. He highlighted India’s recent sporting achievements, including victories in hockey and kho-kho. He urged athletes to push their limits and contribute to India’s growing sports culture.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said Uttarakhand was brimming with youthful energy. He noted that the National Games began with the blessings of Baba Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Maa Ganga. He emphasized that this event showcased the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.’
PM Modi praised the inclusion of local games in the National Games. He said this edition focused on sustainability under the ‘Green Games’ theme. He highlighted the use of eco-friendly materials, noting that trophies and medals were made from e-waste. He announced that organizers would plant a tree for every medal winner.
PM Modi highlighted the government’s efforts to promote sports. He cited the Khelo India Youth Games and University Games as key platforms for young athletes. He stressed that India’s sports budget had more than tripled in a decade. He noted that the TOPS scheme had invested crores in developing elite athletes.
He reiterated India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics. He explained that hosting the event would boost infrastructure, create jobs, and attract global attention. He said the National Games in Uttarakhand would also strengthen the local economy.
PM Modi urged Uttarakhand to expand beyond religious tourism. He encouraged winter spiritual journeys and adventure activities. He invited athletes to explore Uttarakhand after the games.
Concluding, he reminded athletes that the National Games were not just about competition but about unity. He urged them to embrace India’s diversity and contribute to the plastic-free campaign in Uttarakhand.
Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Gurmit Singh, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and other dignitaries attended the event.
